You may qualify for a $1,500 tax credit just by replacing your windows, exterior doors, and patio doors!

Section 1121 of the Residential Energy Property Credit from the IRS states that homeowners who make energy efficient improvements to their existing homes may qualify for an increased tax credit.

So, how do you qualify?

  1. Replace your existing exterior doors, windows, or patio doors with energy-efficient products that have a U factor of .30 or better and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of .30 or better.
  2. Save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement (provided by McDuff Daniels) for your records
  3. Fill out 2009 IRS Form 5695
  4. On line 52 on your 2009 IRS 1040 form, claim the residential energy tax credit
  5. File with your 2009 taxes
  6. Earn up to 30% of the product cost up to $1,500 in tax credits

Tax credit: 30% of the product cost, not including installation, up to $1,500

Available: Now through December 31, 2010

Requirements for products installed after June 1, 2009: U factor <.30 and SHGC <.30

Requirements for products installed before June 1, 2009: Must be ENERGY STAR qualified

Note: Must be an existing home and your principal residence; rentals and new constructions do not qualify

Please be aware that a similar credit was available in 2007, but standards in the new law are higher. Products that qualify as “energy efficient” for purposes of this tax credit must meet these new standards.

How to apply:

To claim a tax credit for exterior doors, windows, and patio doors placed in service in 2009:

  • Fill out 2009 IRS Form 5695
  • On line 52 on your 2009 IRS 1040 form, claim the residential energy tax credit
  • File with your 2009 taxes
  • Save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement (provided by McDuff Daniels) for your records

To claim a tax credit for exterior doors, windows, and patio doors placed in service in 2010:

  • Take the tax credit on your 2010 income taxes
